Childhood and Early life

Matthew Paige Damon was born on October 8, 1970, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His father, Kent, worked in finance and real estate, while his mother, Nancy, was a professor in early childhood education. His sibling include one brother, Kyle, who is three years his senior. Damon’s parents divorced when he was just 2 years old.

Education

Matt Damon did his schooling from institutions such as ‘Cambridge Alternative School’ (now known as ‘Graham and Parks) and ‘Cambridge Rindge and Latin School’. There, he was a disciplined student, was quite popular among teachers and began acting in school productions. Damon attended school and grew up with future actor, Ben Affleck. The two worked together in the high school productions. Damon studied English at Harvard University but left early to pursue his acting career

Career
Early years and struggles: 1988-1996

Before launching into a lead role, Damon played many minor roles in plays such as ‘Burn This Winthrop House’ and ‘A… My Name is Alice’. In 1988, he acted in the film ‘Mystic Pizza’ thus began his acting career in films. However, he only had a single dialogue in the film. During his time at the university, he acted in films such as ‘Rising Son’ and ‘School Ties’. He went for an audition for a movie, Cutthroat Island but was rejected in that. Later Courage of Fire was the movie which offered him the chance to exploit his talent and credibility as an actor. He then left the university without completing his course to star in the movie ‘Geronimo: An American Legend’ in the year 1993.

His next project was in the year 1996, when he worked in the movie ‘Courage Under Fire’. His role was appreciated and gave an indication of his potential to the industry.

Breakthrough: 1997-2000

In 1997, he and Ben Affleck together wrote the screenplay for the film ‘Good Will Hunting’. This film helped Damon to be better established in the Hollywood industry. He also acted in the film and his performance as well as the screenplay received acclamation. The same year he also acted in films ‘The Rainmaker’ and ‘Chasing Army’.

In the year 1988,  Matt played the title role in Steven Spielberg’s film,” Saving Private Ryan (1998)”, which was one of the most acclaimed films in that year.  That same year, he starred as an earnest law student andreformed poker player in Rounders(1998), starring opposite Edward Norton and John Malkovich. The next year, Matt joined the essemble cast of  his childhood friend, Ben Affleck and fellow comedian, Chris Rock, in the comedy “Dogma(1999)”. During the period 1999-2000, he worked in films which include ‘The Talented Mr. Ripley’, and other movies ‘Dogma’, ‘Finding Forrester’, ‘All the Pretty Horses’, ‘The Legend of Bagger Vance’.

Hollywood Star 2001-2007

The first major success of the year 2001 for Matt Damon was the film ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ which earned fame for Damon and then, he also starred in the sequels of this film which are ‘Ocean’s Twelve’ and ‘Ocean’s Thirteen’.

In 2002, he played the protagonist Jason Bourne in the movie ‘The Bourne Identity’ and later, worked in its sequels ‘The Bourne Supremacy’ and ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’. The $110 million Bourne Ultimatum had the largest August opening weekend in movie history, earning an estimated $70.2 million of business in the United States and Canada and it held that record until the release of 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy. He then had movie projects flowing and during the period 2002-06, worked on movies such as ‘Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron’, ‘Stuck on You’, ‘Syriana’, ‘The Brothers Grimm’, ‘The Good Shepherd’, ‘The Departed’.

Critically acclaimed roles: 2009-present

In 2009, he acted in the film ‘The Informant!’ and this film earned him critical acclamations as an actor. The same year, the talented actor worked in the movie ‘Invictus’ in a supporting role and his acting got him nominated in the ‘Academy Award’ for the ‘Best Supporting Actor’.

In 2011, he acted in different movies which include “The Adjustment Bureau, Contagion”, and “We bought a Zoo” and In April 2012, Damon filmed “Promised Land”, directed by Gus van Sant, which he co-wrote with John Krasinski . The next film of Damon was with frequent collaborator Steven Soderbergh was “Behind the Candelabra”, a drama about the life of pianist/entertainer Liberace(played by Michael Douglas) with Damon playing Liberace’s longtime partner Scott Thorson .

In 2013 Damon starred in the science fiction film “Elysium”  where he played former car-thief-turned-factory-worker Max DeCosta and also appeared in the science fiction movie “The Zero Theorem” by  Terry Gilliam in 2013. He acted ed in George Clooney’s  “The Monuments Men”, and played the minor role of scientist Dr. Mann, in Christoper Nolan ‘s Interstellar in 2014.

In the film “The Martian(2015)” by Ridley Scott, He played the main character, that was  based on Andy Weir’s best-selling novel of the same name, a role that which earned him the “Best Actor- Motion Picture Musical or Comedy” in Golden Globe Award  and his second Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. Then after he reprised his role in 2016’s “Jason Bourne, reuniting with Paul Greengrass. His release in 2017 was Zhang Yimou’s “The Great Wall” Damon which was a hit internationally and a disappointment at the domestic box office. Later in 2017, he starred in two satires, George Clooney’s 1950s-set “Suburbicon”, which was released in October, and Alexander Payne ‘s comedy “Downsizing”, which was released in December.

Producing career

With the different personalities Ben Affleck and producers Chris Moore and Sean Bailey, Damon  has co-founded the production company named “LivePlanet, through which the four created the Emmy-nominated documentary series that includes  “Project Greenlight” and its purpose to find and fund worthwhile film projects from  filmmakers. One of the production values from the company includes  different  short-lived mystery-hybrid series Push,Nevada as well as other projects. Damon and Affleck came together again to create Pearl Street Films a Warner Bros based production company.

Voice over career

Damon has given  his voice to the English version of the animated film “Ponyo”, which was released in the United States in August 2009. He has also narrated The documentary American Teacher, which opened in New York in 2011 prior to national screening. He has also lent his voice for the lead character Cale Tucker in “Titan A.E”, took the narrative voice of the Stallion Spirit in “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron”,  and has  voiced a krill  named Bill in “Happy Feet Two”.

Damon also provided voice-over for United Airline’s resurrected “Fly the Friendly Skies” advertisement campaign in 2013.

Personal Life and Legacy

In December 2005, he married Luciana Bozán Barroso after a courtship of about two years. The couple is blessed with three daughters Isabella, Stella Zavala and Gia Zavala. Matt also has a step-daughter named Alexia who is Luciana’s daughter from a previous marriage.He is a follower of the American baseball team ‘Boston Red Sox’, and is himself a poker player and participated in many poker competitions.

He founded the non-profit organization named ‘H2O African Foundation’ which was later merged with the ‘WaterPartners’ organization to form ‘Water.org’ foundation. Humanitarian Work

Damon is the founder of H2O Africa Foundation, the charitable arm of the Running the Sahara expedition, which merged with WaterPartners to create Water.org in July 2009. He collaborating with different personalities  George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Don Cheadle, David Pressman, and Jerry Weintraub, is one of the founders of Not On Our Watch Project, an organization that focuses global attention and resources to stop and prevent mass atrocities such as in Darfaur and  Damon works as an ambassador for ONEXONE, that is a nonprofit foundation committed to support, preserving and improving the lives of children at home in Canada, the United States, and around the world. 

Controversies

In late 2017, Damon found himself mired in controversy over the onset of sexual harassment allegations.

Matt Damon was in trouble because of his statements over The Green Light Project when in his documentary he criticized a black movie maker on the basis of diversity.

There was another bold statement that Matt Damon gave when we has promoting his movie “The Martian”. He said that the gay people should not open about their sexuality as it affects the way people see you as an artist and one should be able to pay the mystery as well.

He has a friendly feud with Jimmy Kimmel because once his time on the show was cut short and Matt stormed out Jimmy made fun of this at the end of few episodes.
